Ten years ago I never would have thought that I would spend more time planning a project than performing it.

Ten years ago I never would have thought that I would spend more time in Visio than Photoshop.

Ten years ago I never would have thought that I would spend more time on a website than an illustration.

Ten years ago I never would have thought that I would be the person in charge of the time of others.

Oh how things change.

Maybe it’s one of those ‘Damn…  I grew up’ kind of things.  The past few years have been pretty tumultuous and have brought a cavalcade of projects  onto my desk, none of which I ever would have thought would be my area of specialty.  I have experience doing many disparate things, from paralegal work to income tax preparation to gambling design, but somehow this all prepped me for some pretty cool things around system design.

The people that I have been doing work for entrust me to a (rather cool) degree.   I get a call with a landslide of ideas for a system.   I sort through those ideas, organize them intro a cohesive whole and package it up for development.  I then oversee the developers and act as a communications point for filtering the different points of development and usage.  This, of course, leads to a whole lot of redefinition of what my ‘job description’ is.  When faced with the simple question of ‘What do you do for a living?’ I always had a simple answer.  ‘Art.  Now?  It comes out as some sort of a weird ramble of ‘Well, I do a lot of art, but I also kind of design systems implemented in gambling , oil and mining and then help out people in the BATFE (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) world’.  Yeah, that just clarifies everything.

The longer I have this website, the less I know how to  populate it with relevant content.  Some little issue or another always pops up like…

  • How do I put up a ‘portfolio’ piece that fully describes all of the mechanics and informational transport of a wide area gambling system that has limited/no network connectivity to  contend with?
  • How do I describe the mechanics of rendering data visualization in a web focused format for the mining and oil industries?
  • How I describe the definition of a very, very custom CRM+Ecommerce Engine targeted at processing game activation requests from disparate locations?

It’s not exactly opening up Photoshop and doing a ctrl+alt+shift+S (save for web).  After all, that’s what you see above –a sketch of a system under development right now.
